Family-Friendly Activities in Manistee & Ludington: Planning your getaway!

Are you planning a photoshoot with me, but you are not local? I created this guide to help you make the most out of your trip! I have many clients travel from all over Michigan (and beyond) to have their photos done on our gorgeous beaches ( one of which was voted best beach in Michigan by USA Today!)  Whether you’re coming from Grand Rapids or somewhere further away and wanting to make a day or weekend trip out of it… there’s so much to do while you’re here!

Manistee offers a little bit of everything!  With our charming downtown, Lake Michigan beaches, and plenty of kid-friendly activities… it’s the perfect destination for both your photoshoot and some family fun. Here’s a guide to help you with where to stay, eat, and explore during your trip!

I will periodically update this list! (let me know if you have a recommendation that I’ve missed!)

Where to Stay:

  1. Hampton Inn & Suites Manistee Waterfront Right across the street from 1st beach. They have fire pits on the back patio, an indoor/outdoor hot tub and a pool! This would probably be my first pick if you wanted a hotel type vibe. It’s the absolute perfect location for fun and convenience!
  2. Little River Casino Resort – They have a pool and many dining options right on the resort.
  3. Manistee National Gulf & Resort – Pool and gulf course!
  4. Ludington State Park Campground (Ludington) – We really love this campground if you are a family who loves to be outdoors!
  5. Here is a list of Airbnbs that my clients have recommended. Let me know if you have a place that I can add to this list! There are lots of airbnb options here.

Where to Eat:

  1. The Outsider – Indoor/outdoor seating. They have pinball machines inside and corn hole outside. This is my favorite for burgers!
  2. Taco ‘Bout It Mexican Fusion – Mexican inspired food. Tacos and more!
  3. Stix  (Ludington) – Their menu ranges from steaks, seafood, and seasonal options, to burgers and salads. They have bowling lanes and often hosts live entertainment as well!
  4. Nuvu – Yes… it’s a gas station, but they are known for their delicious pizza! This is my personal favorite pizza.
  5. Big Al’s Pizza – Local’s love Big Al’s stromboli! This is definitely a take out type of place though 😅
  6. North Channel Brewing Co. – While primarily a brewery, this place has a relaxed vibe and kid-friendly menu items like burgers and fries, plus arcades for entertainment.
  7. House of Flavors (Ludington) – If you’re willing to make a short drive to Ludington, this classic ice cream parlor and restaurant is a hit with families. Their homemade ice cream is perfect for a sweet treat after your meal
  8. Alpine Chocolate haus
  9. Blue Fish Kitchen + Bar – Their food is fresh and local! I do not believe they have a kids menu, but this would still be a great option for families with older kids who can appreciate the more sophisticated menu 😉
  10. The Golden Stag (my personal favorite) – This is a fusion of Italian, Greek, and Middle-Eastern and it is my all time favorite restaurant in this area. It’s SO GOOD! They do offer a kids menu, but this is also a small cozy restaurant… just in case your little ones are energetic 😉 you might want to keep that in mind.
  11. Trophies – A cafe with coffee, breakfast, and lunch items
  12. Port City Brew (my pick for coffee) – Coffee & smoothies

Where to play:

  1. Lighthouse Park – This is a huge wooden playground. My kids love it. For some reason it’s hard to find an address for it, but it is located on Cherry St. between First St. and Harbor Dr. You can’t miss it 😉
  2. Rotary Park – My kids call this the “squishy park” because the floor in the play area is padded. It’s located on First St. just after the round-a-bout.
  3. First Street Beach & Playground – The playground is on the beach.
  4. Manistee Riverwalk – It’s stroller-friendly, and there are plenty of places to stop and sit.
  5. Orchard Beach State Park – For a quick nature escape, Orchard Beach offers hiking, picnicking, and a chance to explore the outdoors. It’s perfect for families who love to be outside.
  6. Sandcastles Children’s Museum (Ludington) – This is such a neat place for the kids to explore and play!
  7. The Vogue – Super cute historic theater! They do a .25 cent family matinee on Saturday mornings at 10:00am!

BEHIND THE LENS

ABOUT Alissa

At home in a small Michigan town near the lake — raising four beautiful, wild-hearted kids and holding close to the fleeting moments that matter most.

Life around here is a little loud, a little messy, and with a lot of love — and that’s exactly what draws me to photography. I’ve spent over 16 years capturing connection, chaos, calm, and everything in between… Because it’s not the big milestones we ache for — it’s the quiet, constant things woven into them.
