If you’re dreaming of natural, relaxed family photos in Ludington—there’s one spot I always recommend: the beach and dunes near Ludington State Park.

It’s the most versatile, kid-friendly, and visually stunning location in the area. In fact, when families ask for the best places to take photos on the beach, this one is at the top of my list. Here’s why:

1. Space to Explore (And Play!)

There’s something magical about wide-open space when you have kids in tow. The beach and surrounding dunes give little ones room to run, jump, dig their toes in the sand, or climb a hill—all without needing to “pose.” This movement and freedom often lead to the most genuine, joy-filled images.

2. Soft, Natural Light

The lakefront light here, especially in the hour before sunset, is a photographer’s dream. Something about the light here somehow gives everything this calm, natural warmth.

3. Multiple Looks in One Spot

You don’t need to drive all over town to get variety. Between the sandy shoreline, grassy paths, trees, and rolling dunes, we can create a full gallery of images that feel diverse without disrupting the flow of the session. Kids stay in rhythm, and parents don’t have to stress about logistics.

4. A Natural, Relaxed Vibe

The setting itself invites calm and connection. Whether you’re walking barefoot as a family, playing in the sand, or letting your toddler chase the waves, the beach brings out everyone’s best selves.

5. A True Michigan Experience

For so many families who live in or visit West Michigan, the lakeshore holds special memories. Capturing your family here adds even more meaning to the images… it becomes more than just a session… it becomes a memory in itself.

So yes, Ludington has a lot of beautiful spots… but for families with young kids? This beach and dune area near the state park is hands-down my favorite. And if you’re not from around here, it’s worth knowing that Ludington State Park has some of the best family-friendly camping in Michigan… perfect for turning your session into a weekend getaway.

Want to plan your session here? I’ll guide you through the best timing, what to bring, and how to make the most of this beautiful setting. Let’s get connected!

BEHIND THE LENS

ABOUT Alissa

At home in a small Michigan town near the lake — raising four beautiful, wild-hearted kids and holding close to the fleeting moments that matter most.

Life around here is a little loud, a little messy, and with a lot of love...  and that’s exactly what draws me to photography. I’ve spent over 16 years capturing connection, chaos, calm, and everything in between… Because it’s not the big milestones we ache for... it’s the quiet, constant things woven into them.
