Session Planning

When everything goes wrong

This dreamy session is probably one of my favorites to date. Here’s why…

Nature was working against us on this day and we got a very late start. On top of that it was an unexpectedly cloudy evening so we were losing light quickly.

Normally this is a recipe for disaster as tensions run high and little ones feeding off of their parents’ stress.

BUT, Mom and dad arrived in a head space prepared and willing to go with the flow

We worked to keep the vibe playful. The kids did their thing, mom and dad loved on their family, and I ran around catching all of the personalities on display.

I’m not going to lie, there were tears and chasing of wild littles, but that resulted in beautiful pictures of momma calming sad feelings and super adorable one-on-one pics of dad trying to convince a little one to join the group.

I want to tell you this because…

… stuff happens at nearly every session with young children.

Kids are unpredictable, weather and traffic can be unpredictable, many things during your day can go awry, and tensions can run high! This is why I tell my clients to come without expectations and be ready for anything. You don’t need to put the extra pressure on yourself of needing everything to be perfect. Focus on loving your family well and trust that I will capture it beautifully.

BEHIND THE LENS

ABOUT Alissa

At home in a small Michigan town near the lake — raising four beautiful, wild-hearted kids and holding close to the fleeting moments that matter most.

Life around here is a little loud, a little messy, and with a lot of love — and that’s exactly what draws me to photography. I’ve spent over 16 years capturing connection, chaos, calm, and everything in between… Because it’s not the big milestones we ache for — it’s the quiet, constant things woven into them.
